WASHINGTON, D.C. (NEWSCHANNEL 3) - President Obama and House Republican leaders will continue discussions on the debt limit throughout the night.
The White House says the meeting hasn't brought any specific agreements on extending the debt limit or an end to the partial government shutdown.
However, Michigan Congressman Fred Upton called the meeting a constructive discussion.
"It's unfortunate that this meeting didn't happen a long time before, but it's good that it happened tonight, and let's hope that it can bring some better relations between the two sides and we can get out of this mess that we've been in," Upton said.
Leaders laid out the House proposal to temporarily extend the debt limit and began discussions over how to re-open the government.
Earlier Thursday, House Speaker John Boehner outlined to Republicans a proposal that would leave the shutdown in place while extending the debt limit for several weeks.
Republicans say granting a debt limit extension could lead to negotiations to re-open the government.
