State Sen. Juan Vargas and Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones will host a town hall meeting on Thursday to inform residents about available resources such as how to file a complaint, disaster preparedness and long-term care insurance.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Gompers Preparatory Academy, 1005 47th St., San Diego. Residents will also have the opportunity to ask questions and air their grievances with staff from the Insurance Department?s Consumer Services Division, Vargas said.
?The Department of Insurance plays an integral role in the well-being of our community,? the San Diego Democrat said in a prepared statement. ?From assisting with disaster recovery to ensuring that healthcare is affordable and accessible, Californians from all walks look to this department for meaningful protection.
?I am pleased that Insurance Commissioner Jones is taking the time to hear from our community about ways we can better protect consumers.?
Among the topics to be addressed are: How to file a complaint with the department; Disaster preparedness and recovery (in particular, fires and earthquakes); Long-term care insurance and Medicare Advantage; Annuities and the Life Annuity Consumer Protection Program; and scams targeting seniors.
Vargas is running for the congressional seat being vacated by Rep. Bob Filner, who is stepping down to run for mayor of San Diego.
Former state Sen. Denise Moreno Ducheny, who is also running in the 51st Congressional District, has taken swipes at Vargas for taking a job with the insurance industry ? which he said he wouldn?t do ? after serving as chairman of the insurance committee in the state Assembly.
