Udder Controversy ? The Mommyhood

No Gravatar

Have you seen the video CNN aired this week as a follow up
to Jamie Oliver?s Food Revolution in Huntington? Two
years after the Food Revolution finished production in Cabell County schools,
controversy still swirls over whether or not to provide flavored milk
(chocolate and strawberry) to students.

I'm Blogging National Nutrition Month

During production, Oliver tried to provide healthy changes
to Cabell County?s school lunch program. Although the West Virginia Office of
Child Nutrition already set the bar higher than most states with regard to
providing healthy school lunch meals, Oliver did find room for improvements.

He wanted meals that had less processed meats, free-range,?organic eggs and?more fresh fruits and more vegetables. One of Oliver?s biggest
gripes was with the milk. He requested that chocolate and strawberry milk be
removed from the cafeteria.

When school officials stopped serving flavored milk, dairy
consumption dropped by 38 percent in elementary and middle schools. Children started
bringing juice and soda from home and were missing out on important nutrients
that milk provides (protein, calcium and vitamin D, just to name a few).

While you have to admire his ideology, many of Oliver?s requests
were too unrealistic for a school system to implement.? ?However, several demands resulted in healthier
and sustainable changes. ?Milk is a good example. After the Food Revolution aired, milk manufacturers lowered the sugar content
of flavored milk by 29 percent.

So, why won?t the argument over chocolate milk go away? Many
nutrition experts say we should only serve white milk to children. They argue
that any added sugar is too much. And too often, the flavoring includes high
fructose corn syrup. On the flip side, most research suggest that children who
drink chocolate milk?consume?less soda and fruity drinks.

Flavored milk, like most food choices, is a personal
decision. What do you think? Do you allow your children to drink chocolate milk
or do you stick with strictly white?

Gold & Silver to Set New Highs in Next 12-18 Months: Nenner ...

The metals may have fallen off the front page but gold is having a good year. Despite several near technical breakdowns, the yellow metal has risen in-line with the S&P 500, up over 8% year-to-date. For it's part the most popular Silver ETF (SLV), has gained over 17%.

While impressive, these are rear view figures. What matters to investors is where we go from here.

Charles Nenner, noted market forecaster and founder of CharlesNenner.com, says both silver and gold are poised to make runs at old highs. He says he sold gold around $1,900/oz. last year in anticipation of a bearish phase.

"The cycle was down into April," Nenner says, but reversed at the beginning of this week, a couple weeks early.

"People had to be shaken out," he says in reference to last year's run at all-time highs. "It cannot be that everybody makes money on gold."

Now that we've culled the overenthusiastic masses Nenner is looking at a rise to the $2,500 level in the next 12 to 18 months. And his outlook for silver is even brighter."It's almost time to get bullish again," Nenner says, "about two weeks or so." From there, he's looking for a move to all-time highs, and possibly beyond. Silver is going back to $50 but "that doesn't mean $50 has to be the end."

Despite his enthusiasm for the metals Nenner cautions the general public not to repeat the events of last year when the late-comers got burned.

"The small investors get in at the end and then the big guys are selling again," Nenner warns. "That has to change. People have to be educated better."

Are the metals headed back to all-time highs or is it too late to join the party? Let us know in the space below or Tweet me @Jeffmacke.

Maryland Team Completes Most Extensive Face Transplant Yet

An anonymous reader writes "A 37-YEAR-OLD man injured in a 1997 gun incident has been given a new face, teeth, tongue and jaw in what doctors say is the most extensive face transplant ever performed. The transplant was performed at the University of Maryland Medical Center. The first full face transplant was performed in France in 2005, on a woman who was mauled by her dog. In a review of the first 17 cases since then, it was found that the overall survival rate after face transplant was 88%, with only two deaths."

Android 4.0.4 rolls out to HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus and GSM Nexus S

Image
Let's just say you have an HSPA+ Samsung Galaxy Nexus (I9250) or a UMTS / GSM Nexus S (I9020). It may behoove you, then, to begin frantically checking your phone to see if any updates are available, because Google has taken to its favorite social network to announce that Android 4.0.4 is rolling out to these devices as well as the Motorola Xoom WiFi, as we reported earlier. This news comes nearly two weeks after we learned from our sources that the Nexus S update was nigh at hand, and only hours after the AOSP became available. This is incredibly exciting for anyone who wasn't able to download ICS on their Nexus S before the update was pulled, and equally thrilling for owners that have been using the version Google disowned since this past December. Heck, it's jubilant enough to make any fan of firmware updates shout with glee. Ready for the asterisk? It's not rolling out to the CDMA counterparts... at least, not yet. It's hard to say what that really means. Are the Verizon Galaxy Nexus and Sprint Nexus S 4G being considered second-class citizens, demoted to as lengthy a wait as the droves of other Gingerbread devices? We're reaching out for word on when (or if) we can expect the refresh to hit these handsets, but Mountain View's lips are shut in the meantime.

TO MOVE AT 3AM WEDNESDAY MARCH 28, 2012 -- LaSalle Dudley talks to a reporter at a meeting where black farmers were filing claim applications related to a settlement of their lawsuit against the Agriculture Department, in Memphis, Tenn. (AP) ? When Roy James needed money to buy equipment and dig an irrigation well for his father's Mississippi farm, he applied for a loan from the U.S. Department of Agriculture ? but was turned down.

The USDA said it denied the application filed in 1995 because James had inadequate education and didn't have farming experience ? even though he had a college degree and had worked for years on the farm that grows soybean, wheat and cotton.

"I couldn't understand why they turned me down," James said. "It was confusing."

He became more frustrated when he found out he missed a deadline to take part in a settlement reached by black farmers with the USDA over discrimination claims. The 1999 settlement of the Pigford v. Glickman lawsuit provided about $1 billion to 15,000 farmers who say the agency unfairly turned them down for loans because of their race between 1981 and 1996.

James said he missed the deadline because he did not find out in time, but he still filed a late claim. Thousands of other black farmers did the same ? a move that may result in a payout, after all.

A second settlement approved by a court in October 2011 is giving another chance to black farmers with discrimination claims from that era who were left out of the first Pigford settlement. Farmers who filed a late claim for the first settlement ? or their relatives ? have until May 11 to file a new claim for thousands of dollars.

Lawyers involved in the case believe that 40,000 to 65,000 black farmers are eligible to claim about $1.2 billion under a bill signed by President Barack Obama.

Thousands have already filed claims, and advocates say payouts could be as high as $250,000 in some cases. Factors that determine how much each claimant gets include the level of damages and losses they experienced, and, because there is a limited pool of money available, how many farmers end up applying.

A panel of people who are not part of the lawsuit or the USDA will decide if claimants are eligible.

The Pigford settlements are viewed as a victory by many. But one group that advocates for black farmers says they are a figurative slap in the face because they don't cover a long enough time period and claimants give up the right to appeal if they are denied.

LaSalle Dudley, 72, filed a claim on behalf of his deceased older sister and her husband, who were denied a loan in the early 1980s for their cotton farm near Senatobia, Miss. The loan was intended to buy machinery so Dudley's brother-in-law could give up manual farming and expand the business. Instead, because the loan was denied, they were unable to produce enough crops and had to close the farm.

Dudley said he hopes to get about $35,000 and would share any money with his brother. He said the claim is a good way to honor his sister.

"They owned the property for so long, and really I would have loved for it to have remained in the family," Dudley said. "I would tell people not to be ashamed or fearful coming forward with what they know happened."

Black farmers were prominent in the 1920s, when they owned 15 million acres of farmland, said John Zippert, director of program operations for the Federation of Southern Cooperatives.

But as years passed and they sought loans to maintain or expand their businesses, many faced adversity. Black farmers seeking loans from the USDA were often turned down for no explicit reason or were approved for much lower sums than they needed. As a result, they had to reduce the size of their farms or sell their properties.

"The USDA presented itself as the lenders of last resort, but in terms of black farmers, they didn't fulfill that promise in many cases," Zippert said. "Many small black farmers because they couldn't get access to USDA credit and other support, had to go out of the farming business."

Today, black farmers own between 3 and 4 million acres of U.S. farmland, according to Zippert, whose organization represented farmers in the Pigford settlements. Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina have the highest numbers of black-owned farms, Zippert said.

As properties have gotten smaller, many black farmers have abandoned traditional row crops such as corn, cotton and wheat. Now, many are growing fruits like watermelon and mangoes and vegetables such as peas and okra because they carry a higher income per acre, Zippert said.

To be eligible for money under the recent settlement, a black farmer needs to have sought a loan for his farm between 1981 and 1996. They also must have registered a written or verbal complaint about any discriminatory treatment they experienced.

Also, applicants must be farmers who missed the initial Sept. 15, 2000 deadline and filed a late claim for the first settlement. Zippert said that many did not receive adequate notice of their eligibility.

In cases where eligible farmers have died, their heirs can make claims. In all, about 65,000 black farmers submitted a late claim for the original Pigford settlement, Zippert said.

"It's not a general re-opening of the case, and that's caused some confusion," Zippert said. "You have people who think that because their parents farmed in the 1940s ... that they are eligible for this, and they aren't."

More than 20 firms are helping farmers file for the new settlement, said Greg Francis, an Orlando, Fla. lawyer. He's placed ads in newspapers, magazines and on the Internet seeking potential claimants.

Francis said his law firm called Morgan & Morgan does not charge those who file a claim. Lawyers' fees are paid by the court.

"No potential claimant should be paying anyone either for a claim form or for assistance in filling out a claims form," Francis said.

Thomas Burrell, president of the Memphis-based Black Farmers and Agriculturalists Association, argues that money should be available to any black farmer with a legitimate claim of discrimination, not just the late applicants from the original Pigford settlement.

Burrell also said it is unfair because it requires black farmers to forever waive their right to appeal if they are not approved.

"The process has never been meaningful, it has never been adequate," Burrell said.

Inglemoor tops Bothell in all-Northshore soccer matchup, Cougs and Viks drop Kingco baseball openers | Prep roundup

Playing in their league openers last night, the Inglemoor and Bothell High boys' soccer teams found the net often, but the Vikings finished with the upper hand in the offensive battle, 5-3.

After trading goals for most of the first half, Inglemoor scored three straight to put the game out of reach.

The scoring barrage started with Kyle Zimmerman unassisted in the 32nd minute, and then Justin Li off Mehron Abdi's assist just as the first half was winding down.

Thirteen minutes into the second half Abdi and Li had a role reversal as Abdi scored off Li for the Vikings' fifth goal, which held up.

Cougar striker Junior Loreto scored all three of Bothell's goals for a hat trick, with Baxter Hagan scoring the Vikings' first two in the 12th and 20th minutes.

Bothell dropped to 2-2 on the season with the loss, and the win was Inglemoor's first in six games so far this season.

?

Cougars drop pitcher's duel to Roosevelt

The Bothell High baseball team dropped its Kingco opener last night to Roosevelt at Lower Woodland Park, losing 1-0 to the Roughriders in a pitcher's duel.

Tough-luck starter Brady Mickelson for Bothell struck out nine, and gave up just one run in the first inning which proved to be the difference.

Rex Carlin led the offense for the Cougars, going 2-for-3 with a double.

The team plays again on Thursday against Northshore rival Woodinville, first pitch at 7 p.m. at Woodinville High School.

?

Vikings drubbed by Falcons in league opener

The powerful Woodinville Falcons flexed their offensive muscle on Tuesday night on Inglemoor's home turf, routing the Vikings 13-2 in their 4A Kingco league opener.

A total of 10 runs were plated in the first two innings by the Falcons, who scored 13 times on just eight hits.

The Vikings continue their league schedule on Thursday at home against Ballard, first pitch at 4 p.m.

?

Inglemoor tennis falls to Woodinville

The Viking girls' tennis team got swept in doubles play last night in a 4A Kingco matchup against Woodinville, eventually losing 5-2 to the Falcons.

Highlights for Inglemoor included No. 1 singles player Sabrina Demereath beating Jenny Foote 7-5, 6-1, and No. 2 Janae Chinn besting Cora Byers 6-2, 6-2.

?

Viking fastpitch routs Enumclaw

Playing in another nonleague game on Monday afternoon, the Inglemoor girls charged past Enumclaw 14-2.

Alyson Harrington pitched a gem for the Vikings, with both Enumclaw runs unearned.

Offensively, Taylor Peacocke had a double and two singles for five RBIs, with freshman Izzy Riddle reaching base four times including a triple for two RBIs.

The Vikings play tonight in a makeup game against Mount Si, starting at 6 p.m.

Italy's Cinque Terre readies for spring tourists

Tom Wallace

Floodwaters rush into Vernazza's harbor after an intense rainstorm ripped through the Cinque Terre region of Italy on Oct. 25, 2011. Monterosso, another Cinque Terre town, also was devastated.

By Tanya Mohn, msnbc.com contributor

For the residents of the Cinque Terre, a region of five quaint coastal villages nestled in cliffs overlooking the Ligurian Sea on Italy?s northwestern coast, the arrival of spring may be especially sweet this year.

Last fall, torrential rains, massive flooding and mudslides, some more than 13 feet high, devastated the area. Homes, businesses and trails were damaged. In the aftermath of the violent Oct. 25?storm, there was concern about how the storm would impact the tourism season, which typically begins in spring.

But preliminary reports are positive.

The Cinque Terre is ready to receive tourists, according to a representative in the Italian Government Tourist Board in New York, who said that by Easter, the region hopes to have all the paths open. The famous ?Via dell?Amore? (?Love?s path?) trail is open, but others sustained damage and were closed due to safety issues. The Parco Nazionale delle Cinque Terre, the national park, provides regular trail updates on its website.?

About 400,000 tourists?visited the region in 2011, about half of whom are?Italian and?some 60,000 Americans, the representative said, quoting data from the regional office in Liguria of the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat).?

Edward Piegza, president and founder of Classic Journeys, who spoke by phone with his company?s local tour guides as well as business owners in the Cinque Terre before being interviewed by msnbc.com, said many shops and restaurants are open in Monterosso, one of the two towns damaged by the storm. And those that are not ?are working quickly to rebuild by tourist season, the beginning of April,? he said.

Classic Journeys has offered its ?Tuscany and the Cinque Terre Cultural Walking Tour? since 1996.

Classic Journeys

A group of tourists walks to Vernazza in Italy's Cinque Terre region in 2005.

The Cinque Terre is known for distinctive pastel-colored homes, seaside charms, and its network of walking and hiking trails along cliffs, linking the towns and winding though terraced hills of vineyards, and olive and chestnut groves, offering dramatic views and ample opportunities for much needed espresso and gelato breaks.

The Cinque Terre, Piegza said, ?captures a different time and place.? And much of the draw is its ?real sense of authenticity, when people lived more simply.?

Beth Rubin, manager of custom travel planning for Select Italy, a company specializing in travel to Italy, said tourism to Cinque Terre had ?exploded? in recent years. ?It?s very outdoorsy and offers an active vacation that?s not too expensive. People who are traveling on a budget really like to go there.? Select Italy plans to offer its full range of tours,?and its local suppliers ?are going to find a way,? to work around any potential problems, she said. ?

Other tour companies are reporting similar determination to proceed.

?We would never consider canceling our tours,? said Carolyn Walters Fox, who handles marketing and media relations for Country Walkers, ?as long as it?s safe.?

Country Walkers specializes in active travel and has offered guided walking and hiking tours to the region for about 15 years. Currently, six tours are planned from May through the autumn. The local people ?have been so good to us,? Fox said. ?Tourism is an opportunity to give back.? ?

Melanie Morin, who manages tours to the Cinque Terre region, is not worried if trails the company used in the past are not open in May. ?The alternative routes still make a spectacular tour,? she said, and the local residents ?are really trying to do everything they can to be ready for the season.?

Piegza, of Classic Journeys, recounted how one of its tour groups had been dining at Al Pozzo, a restaurant in Monterosso last October when the rain started. The group was able to leave the area before the storm became dangerous, but the restaurant was severely damaged.

Restaurant owners Jolanda and Gino Barilari, told Piegza by phone earlier this month that Al Pozzo recently reopened, and some American tourists had just finished eating lunch.

?They were able to complete their restaurant almost a month early,? Piegza said, noting that for more than four months the extended Barilari family ?worked from sunrise to sundown, seven days a week, to rebuild. They were so exited. They said ?wow? we made it through.?? (?Rebuild Monterosso? provides updates for businesses and activities.)

Tourists in Italy can learn about history, architecture, art and much more.

?We encourage people to come,? said Michele Sherman, an American expat living in Italy, and executive director of Save Vernazza, a nonprofit created after the disaster to raise funds and awareness to rebuild, restore and preserve the town. Vernazza was the town most impacted by the storm.??A lot has been done, but a lot still needs to be done,? she said.?

The group?s website Travel Advisor page lists updated information about what local businesses and trails are open or scheduled to reopen, and what is off limits. ?We?re in constant contact with all the local business owners and we?re in the loop about the status of trail repairs,? Sherman said. ?We?re always walking around with a camera.?

When UNESCO added the area to?the World Heritage List in 1997, it cited ?the harmonious interaction between people and nature to produce a landscape of exceptional scenic quality.? But through the years?the surrounding?terraced hills were neglected as the local?economy shifted from agriculture to tourism, Sherman said.??The focus in Vernazza changed.??But finding a balance between maintaining the territory and sustainable tourism is?critical to moving forward, she said, ?not only to prevent further disasters, but also to preserve Vernazza?s cultural heritage. It's still beautiful,? Sherman said. It?s not what it once was, ?but it can be that way again.?

Jen Jones: A Nation Is Watching North Carolina's Amendment One Fight... Are You?

2012-03-21-A1stinks.jpgBack in January 2012, when National NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Jealous said that the nation was watching North Carolina, he could not have been more accurate.

Since the beginning of the year, the national spotlight has shone brightly on recent legislative attacks on North Carolina voting rights, public education, workers, women, and public safeguards for the poor, minorities, and other oppressed populations, but it has shone brightest of all on an overreaching constitutional amendment on the May 8 ballot, now known as Amendment One, that, in the process of discriminating against gay and lesbian families, would potentially dismantle protections for all unmarried couples in North Carolina and their children.

Last week Amendment One even drew the ire of the President of the United States, who voiced his opposition to the ballot measure, representing the first time Barack Obama has weighed in on a state referendum touching gay issues since the 2008 campaign trail. With his statement, the president joined a chorus of unlikely Amendment One opponents, from conservative Republican U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers, who was one of the first to say she will vote against the amendment, to N.C. NAACP President Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, who called the legislation a "trick" and reminded the state that "none of us should ever want to deny any other person of constitutional protections."

But arguably the most telling national endorsement of North Carolina's anti-Amendment-One efforts came on March 19 from the California Democratic Party. In a statement released on Monday, California Democratic Party Chair John Burton applauded the president's opposition to what Burton called "a divisive ballot amendment" and pledged that California Democrats "stand ready to help and we will soon be in touch with ways that Democrats here can start getting the word out to voters in North Carolina about the need to defeat Amendment One."

This unprecedented offer from one state's political party to reach out to its counterpart in another state -- not to mention in a state across the country -- to help defeat an upcoming ballot referendum reveals increased national understanding of the far-reaching consequences of Amendment One to children and families in the Tar Heel State. It also signals increased momentum within the state itself to be the first in the South to reject a broadly worded effort to disenfranchise hundreds of thousands of its citizens, robbing them of health care, domestic violence protections, and child custody and visitation.

In recent weeks North Carolina appears to be heeding the call to vote against this type of poorly worded referendum, with North Carolina Governor Bev Perdue recently telling appreciative Charlotte crowds, "I'll do everything I can to defeat it." The governor's voice joins that of the state's Libertarian Party, which just last week released a statement opposing Amendment One, citing, among other harms, the amendment's economic impact and its effect on "people all over the state."

The Libertarian resolution joins dozens of others in North Carolina, from party Democrats, local governments, faith communities, professional organizations, business leaders, and universities and colleges, encouraging voters to cast their ballot against an amendment that would harm not only their neighbors but the perception of the state on the national stage.

And lest there be bleating from proponents of Amendment One that any national voices represent unwelcome outside interference in state matters, let's not forget that the forces of the Washington, D.C.-based hate group, the Family Research Council, have been infiltrating North Carolina for the past eight years that this amendment has been a possibility, with anti-gay behemoths like the National Organization for Marriage a mere month away from releasing their "gathering storm" propaganda on the people of my state.

But this is 2012. And early in the election year here in North Carolina, it appears, for the most part, that this wedge issue has lost its edge even among North Carolina's historically conservative Democratic politicians. In fact, to date, all 2012 Democratic gubernatorial and lieutenant gubernatorial candidates have publicly opposed Amendment One, most in the same week they announced their candidacy.

This unequivocal support among respected North Carolina leaders also coincides with a dramatic drop in public appetite for legislation like Amendment One, with the latest nonpartisan Elon University poll, released March 9, revealing that a majority of North Carolinians are themselves opposed or strongly opposed to Amendment One, including a particularly dramatic increase in the category of "strong opposition" to this type of amendment, with 34 percent now voicing strong opposition, up from just 21.8 percent in February 2011.

Today, Amendment One bashing appears to be becoming a badge of honor in a state known as the progressive voice of the South. And so as this growing statewide and national chorus of anti-Amendment-One sentiment sings loudly, we stand more confident than ever in the rising harmony among voters -- to vote against Amendment One -- on May 8.

College Baseball Preview - Oklahoma At Texas Tech

Oklahoma's Jordan John moves from the bullpen to the starting rotation this weekend. Photo via cdn2-b.examiner.com

For the first time this season the Oklahoma Sooners will enter a baseball weekend as an unranked team. Deservedly so though after riding a five-game losing streak into this week that included a weekend sweep at the hands of unranked Texas. Now, after beating Air Force in both games of last Tuesday's double header to snap the losing streak, Oklahoma is heading to Lubbock to look for their first conference win.

Star-divide

Head Coach Sunny Galloway decided to make some major changes to the weekend pitching rotation beginning with inserting Jordan John into the rotation as the Friday pitcher. John has been Oklahoma's most reliable pitcher this season. Coming in as a middle reliever he has pitched 29.1 innings and has a team low 2.76 ERA and a 3-3 record. He has struck out 28 batters this season while only allowing 26 hits.

John will be squaring off against Duke von Schamann who has a 2.62 era and a 2-3 record on the season. If his name sounds vaguely familiar its because he is the son of legendary Oklahoma kicker Uwe von Schamann who is responsible for one of the greatest moments in Sooner football history.

Duke von Schamann leads the team in innings pitched with 34.1 under his belt. He too has struck out more batters (26) than he has given up hits (25).

Jonathan Gray is Oklahoma's Saturday starter once again. He has a 2-3 record and a 5.88 ERA but seems to have found his stride, so to speak, in recent weeks. His six starts this season are the most among the pitching rotation. He'll be faced against Tech's John Neely who is 2-1 and has a 3.29 ERA on the season. Neely has seven appearances this season but has only put in 13.2 innings of work. This will be his third start of the season.

No starter has been listed for Texas Tech for Sunday's final game but the Sooners are moving Dillon Overton from the Friday starter to the Sunday starter. Overton's 37.2 innings pitched are the most among the Sooner staff. He has earned a team best 3-0 record by striking out 34 batters and maintaining a 3.11 ERA.

Here's where I get a little worried in this series though. Led by Scott LeJeune the Red Raiders are tops in the Big XII in team batting average at .312 and the team that currently has the worst batting average in the conference just swept the Sooners in Norman last weekend. LeJeune is batting a ridiculous .388 on the season. Oklahoma is currently fifth in team batting average at .280.

The Red Raiders are third in the Big XII with a team ERA of 3.25 while the Sooners are eighth at 4.92.

First pitch in the series is slated for 6:30 pm (CST) tonight.

Apple patent app portends gadgets made of glass

Image
Thought all those shattered screens and iPhone 4 backplates would push Apple towards making mobile devices machined from aluminum like its laptops and tablets? Think again, friends, because a newly published patent application from Cupertino indicates the company is considering crafting portable computing devices out of glass. The app claims a "substantially seamless enclosure . . . extruded in its entirety with glass material" so that wireless signals can freely flow to and fro, along with a method for manufacturing such a device. Naturally, this is only an application, and it doesn't say exactly what kind of super-durable glass would make this a desirous design change. So, who knows if we'll ever see an all-glass exterior on an iPhone or iPod, but you can get a more in-depth peek at that potential future at the source link below. You can also get a glance at what'll be Android's new anthem should that glass-filled future come to pass.

internet marketing - Internet Marketing - Using Podcasts

Do you know what a "podcast" is? A podcast is simply an audio recording (typically in MP3 form), where you talk about a certain subject, and submit them to the podcast directories. Now the biggest podcast directory on the internet is iTunes. Almost every famous person who has a show or a popular Youtube channel uses podcasts to market their products and services. Even my favorite financial expert Suze Orman uses podcasts to teach her listeners tips and advice on how to be financially free.

When I first got started making podcasts for one of my old businesses along while ago, I would use a webcam to record myself on video, and then extract the audio from the video file to create the podcast. Now granted, the software that I was using to turn my videos into podcast wasn't too good - but it was all that I had at the time.

Plus, I used a cheap $20 webcam to record my videos. You could hear a "squeaking" noise in the background of the webcam video, but that was just a testament of how "low-tech" this webcam was. I didn't have the money to buy a camcorder, so I was stuck with this option.

I honestly believe that when I extracted the audio from the video file that my webcam created, it picked up on the "squeaking" noise in the background, and incorporated it into the podcast MP3 file. So needless to say, the resulting podcast file was of very low quality.

I bring this story up because if you want to make a podcast, you will have to do it right. Either buy a microphone and record yourself on a computer, or get a camcorder to record yourself via that. The camcorder option is actually a "double whammy" for your marketing efforts. You can take the video and upload it to Youtube, and you can extract the audio file and create a podcast out of it. It's very simple and easy to do.

So how long should your podcast be? Well, Suze Orman's podcasts are over 40 minutes long. So if you think that people will only want a 5 minute podcast, you're mistaken. You can make it as long as you want. Just make sure you provide alot of high quality information that your listeners can use to achieve a goal or solve a problem in their life.

If there's one thing that I want you to remember about today's lesson, it's that iTunes is definitely where you will want to submit your podcast to. And it's free to do so. They are the largest podcast directory on the internet. There are other podcast directories out there also, but this one definitely takes the cake.

Get started working on your podcast today so that you can start driving people back to your website simply and easily. Make sure you mention your website address at the very beginning and at the end of the podcast. This is how people will get in touch with you and will visit your website simply and easily.

Take these tips and use them to market your podcasts today.

Good luck with using podcast marketing in your online business.

94% Undefeated

All Critics (69) | Top Critics (29) | Fresh (65) | Rotten (4)

Volunteer high school coach Bill Courtney says, "Football doesn't build character. Football reveals character." The triumphant sports documentary "Undefeated" proves that it does both.

[A] stirring, emotional portrait of a high school football team in the impoverished neighborhood of North Memphis, Tenn.

It's a bit too long and a bit too vague at times, but this is a film about dedication, progress and the bond of human effort. It just also happens to include football.

"Undefeated'' needs less of what we know we've seen (the football stuff) and more of the players' and coaches' lives, which even if we feel we've seen, we haven't.

What makes this a terrific film is how much we care about the players.

For all its good intentions, the film, like its main subject, is a tourist, earning trust as it earnestly captures the incredible struggles of these young men, but never digging deep enough to actually make the story theirs.

A touching documentary that offers a field-level portrait of male mentorship, compassion and unvarnished hope - all without a Hollywood ending.

It is a powerful reminder of the difference one person can make -- and of the consequences when no one is willing to make that difference.

What lifts 'Undefeated' above other sports docs is the remarkable force of Bill Courtney's personality.

It may call to mind The Blind Side or Remember the Titans, but there's no Hollywood glitz in the blighted burg of Manassas.

I regret that we don't meet more of Courtney's players, but that might have required a miniseries rather than a movie. And "Undefeated" makes sure the coach who is its central figure is more complex and fascinating than most fictional movie characters.

...an inspirational and often touching film that lets us get to know a dedicated coach who has faith in his players and delivers what he promises (almost).

This is a film that doesn't cater only to the traditional football fan.

In introducing us to [Coach] Courtney...Undefeated finds its voice

Just like a well-fought playoff win, it'll leave you a little misty-eyed.

This is one of the best sports documentaries of the last few years and while I don't think it should have won in a VERY good year for non-fiction film, I'm really not upset at all that it did.

Finds the warmth and vulnerability that is sometimes hard for outsiders to see beneath the rough, damaged exterior of the impoverished Memphis neighborhood where much of the action takes place.

The hardened inner-city kids here are far more authentic than anything Hollywood can offer, and as a result the film has a raw emotional weight that commercial features rarely achieve.

Newt Gingrich Demands Apology From Robert De Niro Over "First White Lady" Joke

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich called on President Obama to apologize for comments made by actor Robert De Niro at a fundraiser Monday.

"What De Niro said last night was inexcusable and the president should apologize for him. It was at an Obama fundraiser, it is exactly wrong," Gingrich said.

What did the actor say to draw such a harsh rebuke?

De Niro told a New York City crowd of about 90 people, including his wife and First Lady Michelle Obama, that it was "too soon" for a "white first lady."

"Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white First Lady?" the 68-year-old asked, jokingly.

The crowd roared. Someone yelled "No!" De Niro asked, "Too soon, right?"

Gingrich said the comments made by De Niro "divide the country."

"If people on the left want to talk about radio show hosts, then everybody in the country ought to hold the president accountable when somebody at his event says something as utterly, totally unacceptable as Robert De Niro said last night," he said.

If that sounds like a defense of Rush Limbaugh, it sort of is. Newt has a point about double standards of media coverage, but De Niro was likely making light of the fact that so many people viewed Obama's 2008 candidacy in racial terms.

In any case, Gingrich said the president should hold De Niro accountable.

"On behalf of my wife, and on behalf of Karen Santorum and on behalf of Ann Romney, I think Robert De Niro is wrong. I think this country is ready for a new First Lady and he doesn't have to describe it in racial terms," he added.

The White House and the First Lady's office agreed with Newt. "We believe the joke was inappropriate," said Olivia Alair, Michelle Obama's press secretary.

The proceeds from Monday's event benefitted the Obama Victory Fund, a joint venture supporting the Obama campaign and Democratic National Committee.

'Voice' Judges 'Love House Parties,' Blake Shelton Says

'We'll get together almost every night, all the coaches, believe it or not,' country singer tells MTV News.

While there seems to be a friendly rivalry between the four judges on "The Voice," off camera, that rivalry is nonexistent. The sole country star among the foursome, Blake Shelton, revealed to MTV News just what those crazy kids do when the cameras stop rolling and they are left to their own devices.

"We hang out a little bit," he told us. "It's different out there in Los Angeles, and I don't really fit in on the scene, but there's been a time or two [we'll hang out], normally during the live episodes, especially last year. We'll get together almost every night, all the coaches, believe it or not."

Shelton remembered one get-together where the only lady judge showed up to party with bells on. "I had a party last year at my house," he recalled. "And I'll be damned if the first person at my door wasn't Christina Aguilera. We love our house parties on 'The Voice.' "

The singer's love for all his judge pals extends beyond a good party; he wants them on his team too! One judge in particular would be Shelton's first pick for Team Blake: "Cee Lo, because he can do anything. He can do rock. I've never heard him rap, but I'm sure he can rap. I know he does whatever it is he does [musically, and] he's really good at it. That's who I want: Cee Lo."

But what if he could cast his dream bromance? Well, that honor goes to someone else. "All I have to say is, it's true: I have a man crush on Adam," Shelton admitted. "It blows me away people can pick up on that just by watching that on television. I want to kiss him. I want to kiss him so bad. I don't care if it's mutual or not. Can you honestly tell me that you don't have a little bit of a crush on Adam? He's sexy, is the word I'm using."

Fitbit Review

Fitbit

Ever wonder just how many steps you took on an average day? Most of us would probably think we walk quite a bit, and depending on your job some of you may very well walk a few miles on a daily basis. When Fitness Month began I knew I wanted to become more active, but how do you become "more" active if you have no baseline to compare how active you are currently?

There is unfortunately no official Android application for the Fitbit, but there is an unofficial application that will display your stats. Fit Wiz will show you the synced data that is in your account right from your device. In addition there are a few API's available for developers to use so they can integrate their applications along with the Fitbit, and quite a few Android developers have already done so. MyFitnessPalEndomondo, Lose It and others allow your Fitbit data to sync with their applications to help ensure your activity levels are accurately accounted for across the board.

Sure, you could attempt to count your steps on a daily basis, but what are the odds that you will be able to actually do it? When looking for a way to measure and log my daily levels the one accessory that continued to stand out was the Fitbit.  The Fitbit is a small accessory that you carry along with you daily in your pocket, on your belt, or even attached to your bra if you wish. Could a simple accessory like the Fitbit really have a big impact on your day to day fitness levels? Let's hit the break and dive a little bit deeper into exactly what this little thing can do.
